PlayLink Universal

Exploring the potential for adaptive re-use in playgrounds, this research-based project involves adding plug-on design elements to existing play spaces, making them more accessible and sustainable.

Working closely with researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience of disability, we’re addressing how old-fashioned playgrounds could be modified to become more inclusive. Through the University of Sydney Periscope Commercialisation Award program, and in partnership with leading academic, Dr. Sanne Mestrom, we’re bringing specialists, occupational therapists, engineers, and makers on board to advance this cutting edge research.

Currently in conversation with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, we’re exploring the possibilities of collaboration to design custom elements within playgrounds that allow those within the Cerebral Palsy community to be part of the design process. These custom-designed elements attach to existing playground infrastructure, integrating into the current fabric, rather than creating separate areas for children with disabilities and their families.

This project is deeply informed by our desire to address inclusivity and sustainability within the urban environment. It shares our deep consideration of the built environment and how it can form and support communities. Recent additional funding will enable us to start designing these adaptable pieces to ensure real change is possible – turning playgrounds into spaces where everyone feels like they belong.
